WARNING: Grouply *Don't join this*

I hope moderators can make this a sticky for now.

Over the weekend, I received four requests to join Grouply. The invitations looked harmless. They were from members of Yahoo groups that I was a part of.

What Grouply does is take the user name of someone in the group and sends out a mass email, requesting members to join in the group. If you join the group, you are now subject to receive massive amounts of spam email. Sometimes, the person initiating the invitation has no clue that they've just invited some 200 other people to join their "Grouply" group.

So, if you do receive an invitation to join Grouply, I discourage you from clicking on the link and joining.

The latest Grouply request I received was from mjbonoan (Mary Jayne) through the Stamp Shack Yahoo Group.

Ethel, I'm not going to make this sticky, but I will certainly help to bump it up. I suggest others do the same.
Many Shackies use the new posts feature and so making a post sticky doesn't keep it at the top of the New posts page, but bumping it up by adding a comment does.
This does sound like one to avoid.

I got that invite, and I deleted it. I really wish all these brilliant people who come up with annoying internet scams and viruses would put thier tallents to good use! They must be smart, so why aren't they also honorable people too? What a waste!

I got that same email and deleted it. We already have a Shack Yahoo group, I thought it was odd. Thanks for letting me know what it is.

I got one and deleted it, but it was from another yahoo group I belong to.

I also got an invitation to Facebook from someone I know and good thing when I signed up, I caught the part where it would send invites to EVERYONE in my address book and skipped that part.

Sherri, are these popups or actual emails? If emails, then report them as junk and then go to your junk folder and block sender. That's what I do for junk mail.

A "Sticky" is a thread that a Moderator or Administrator causes to stay at the top (or 'stick' to the top) of the MB so that everyone can be sure to see it.

Bumping this up just incase anyone missed it. I haven't had the email yet, even thouh I am on the Shackies Yahoo group- Glad I have this warning if it does show up though.
