I've been talking to this woman about an externship and I (finally!) got a call from them yesterday morning and they want me to come in for an interview Monday morning!!! I am so excited!!! It's kinda cool...because they have never done an "externship" before and didn't know anything about it. So, I had my Externship Coordinator at the school contact the woman and explain it to her. She is a really nice and friendly person. So, I am hoping that they offer me the externship. I am really nervous, but excited.

If you could send some positive thoughts /vibes my way..that would be great!

Wish me LUCK!!!

I'm happy for you! That sounds promising. But I don't know what an externship is either...

Thank you!

Tracey, Renu..an externship is where I can go to gain experience in the job field (hopefully) of my choice. I took a Medical Assisting program (graduate in May) and in order to complete the program we are required to do an externship at medical facility. We have to do a minimum of 180 hours...if it turns into a job..even better! But we need to do this in order to graduate and complete our program. If my explanation of an "externship" wasn't that clear..we are basically working for free for 180 hours (full time that is 4.5 weeks)...and trying to gain experience as well.

hth!

Thank you again ladies for all your wishes and support. I greatly appreciate them and you! :)

Ok, I understand but how is that different than an "internship". When I worked at the eye dr, we had revolving girls from the local business college. We LOVINGLY called them the "free help". LOL

Great, Darlene!
LOADS of good luck that this will happen for you!
I, too, wonder how this compares to an internship.
Our DS had one with Campbell's Soup while in college for his food scientist degree and he didn't get paid either.
Maybe they are really pretty much the same?

Best wishes Darlene! I suspect it is similar to what we called an intership in my day.

Don't know if this is correct but my son is doing an internship with Delta Airlines while in college ... AND GETS FULL TIME PAY! Maybe an externship just means that you work for free.

Okay this is what I got when I googled it:

Depending on the circumstances, the differences between an internship and an externship can be subtle, but the differences generally center on duration and compensation. While an internship typically lasts for at least a school term and concludes with the reward of academic credit or monetary payment, an externship is usually short in duration and may offer no earnings of any kind. There are however, paid externships, and unpaid internships, as well as long externships and short internships, so these are not a universal distinction.

I found this as the definition of externship

Definition of Externship:
An Externship is a work experience required in the medical field in the following curriculums: Medical Assistant, Medical Insurance Specialist, Medical Transcription, Phlebotomy, Pharmacy Clinical, EKG, and Biomedical Engineering Technology. As these work experiences require extensive training in coordination with academic learning, they are usually unpaid.

Where as an Internship is

Definition of Internship
An Internship is a short-term work experience of at least 120 hours. In these positions the student continues training on the job directly under a supervisor or manager, thus learning a variety of skills; therefore, these positions are unpaid. The participating student also earns four credits for completing the course, which includes a written report

Shelley that is about what my intership was many years ago...no pay but fulltime work with school credits-then graduation- also in the medical field such as lab and nursing we call them clinicals. Some universities/colleges have coops-similar to what Joanne is saying- full pay for a semester... it will be interesting to see what Darlene's is...not sure what field she is in but sounds medical doesn't it.

Darlene went to school for medical assistant.

Back in my day, I did co-op. I went to school so many days a week, eg I went, Monday Wed and Friday, then my days off Tuesday and Thursday, I did my co-op job. I was luckly enough, that I got paid for it, and got credit for it too. I think I did it for 2 semesters. I know I ended up with extra credits when I graduated.

Back in my day, I did co-op in my senior year of high school. I went to school until noon and then worked at Simmons Mattress Company in the Personnel Office from 1:00 - 5:00 and got paid for working. Then they hired me full time when I graduated.

yes in high school I did health occ-got to leave go to my job at the hospital-got paid all was good. I guess really things haven't changed so much except now kids in high school don't get the experience we were able to get. I learned lots by working and going to school. Pretty much worked all my life which is why my dad didn't want me to work in high school but I loved working in Xray at the local hospital.

Even EMT's do something similar to an externship. So many hours ride time, with a certain amount of assesments. Such as trauma, medical, airway, bleeding control. Basically its the practical part of what you learn in the classroom.

Our "externship" is not for credits, we don't get credits for our externship..it"s just work experience..it is usually unpaid, but it can be paid if the company offers you a position:)

as for the term..that is just what the school calls it.. sorry for the confusion... :)
