Have you tried this cool background technique called smackin' acetate. I saw it on Gina (http://blog.ginakdesigns.com/) K's Blog. She has a step by step picture tutorial. you scribble on a piece of acetate with any kind of waterbased marker pen (even the cheapo kids ones), then spritz it with water to let the colours bleed, and lastly place a piece of white card ontop and rub the back. I've been trying it tonight and it's so easy and doesn't require any expensive equipment.
I stamped some butterflies on to my background with stazon and cut them out- NO COLOURING IN needed (Yay. I don't colour unless I absolutely have to!) I'll post a photo of my card in the gallery soon. Here's the link to GinaK-

loobylou, isn't this a fun technique? Thanks for reminding me about it; I haven't playing with that in a long time. I think I'll try it again.

It is an awesome technique...and you can use all kinds of mediums with it for all kinds of results. I use the plastic report covers and put paper back to back after the ink has been smooshed. I love the effect of acrylic paints...especially the metallic ones from the cheap to ones like Luna Lights.

2 cards I made with the smackin' acetate technique are now in my GALLERY (http://stamp-shack.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=2220&limit=recent). Can't wait to try it with different colours.

I just made a bookmark using vintage stamps and all the brown tone felt tip markers i could find in my kids pencil cases. i think it looks like alcohol inks but of course is WAY cheaper to do.

to this technique. Yesterday I met with 3 friends and shared the "smackin' acetate' technique. It is totally new to us, though some of you guys say it's been around a while. Anyhoo, we tried lots of different colour combos. I stamped butterflies and dragon flies on all my samples. Click on the link below to see my 1st dragonfly card made up

Here's a great tutorial at SCS. This one talks about only inks, but don't forget (as Susan said above), this technique is great with ink pads, paints, just about any wet colouring medium!

This may be a technique that has been around a while, but it's nice to be reminded about it and try it again. Thanks for the link to Gina K's, too. Another talented lady!
